Understanding Students' Experiences

When you think about student life, do you picture a scene from the TV series Fresh Meat? A bunch of mismatched housemates missing lectures, drinking in the union bar, and getting into character-building scrapes?

Higher education institutions currently face a number of challenges, such as increasing competition for students, financial pressures and ongoing uncertainty resulting from Brexit and Coronavirus. In this climate, universities need to maximise the learners they can reach, and many are using digital technology to redefine how higher education is delivered; distance learning has become a key channel for many providers. In the 2017/18 academic year there were more than 100,000 international students enrolled in distance learning degree programmes provided by UK universities.

We’ve grown the scope of the work we do in this area as people have realised the value online research communities can deliver. The research has enabled us to see how students evaluate the market. We now have a better understanding of how and where we need to compete.
