7 steps to successful online qual moderation

Written by John Whittle | 23 Sep 2021

Moderating asynchronous online qual is not the same as in-person moderation or even moderating online focus groups.

This may seem obvious but pinning down the differences can be more elusive than you may think.

On the surface, the principle difference can be chalked up to the fact you are speaking via technology, rather than in person, but the reality is that this change brings about a whole host of challenges AND opportunities.

Whilst traditional moderation can be reactive at nearly all levels, online moderation requires both a mix of tactical and responsive engagement.

It requires a different set of moderating skills and techniques that involve more than interacting with participants when they complete your activities.

It can be complex, and unpredictable, disorderly and demanding but with planning and preparation you can navigate some of the most common missteps to keep your participants fully engaged and to maximise the usefulness of their responses.

Led by Dr John Whittle, MRS-approved trainer, social scientist, and qualitative methodology specialist, this hour-long session will cover everything you need to master online qualitative moderation.
